Marist Readers Defend Title in Archdiocese of Atlanta's Battle of the Books

Marist School proudly hosted the Battle of the Books competition on March 21, welcoming nearly 300 talented students enrolled in 3rd-8th grade. Established in 2003 by Catholic school librarians and sponsored by the Archdiocese of Atlanta, this event gathered young readers from Catholic schools across the greater Atlanta area, including many siblings of current Marist students, for a thrilling literary competition.

The Marist 8th grade team successfully defended their championship title at this year's event. Grant Crunk, Claire Duffy, Eleanor McElhanon, and Ella Straessle from the Class of 2028 concluded their Battle of the Books careers with a resounding victory, marking the end of an era filled with dedication to and passion for reading.
Not to be outdone, the Marist 7th grade team, composed of Rose Kahn, Natalie Schneider, Lucy Thomas, and Caitlyn Whitney, showcased their formidable knowledge. They clinched the runner-up position after an intense nine-round battle in the afternoon finals against Hapeville, Georgia’s St. John the Evangelist Catholic School. Their remarkable performance is a testament to their hard work throughout the school year.

The Battle of the Books is not just a competition; it's a celebration of literacy and teamwork. Students form grade-level teams of three or four and embark on a year-long journey, devouring a carefully curated selection of books. The questions posed during the competition are rooted in the content of these books, requiring participants to recall details with precision.

Ms. Angela Williams, Marist School librarian and master of ceremonies for the Battle of the Books, eloquently summarized the essence of the event: "The Battle of the Books isn't just about winning; it's about the journey of exploration through the pages of diverse stories, and the camaraderie forged in the pursuit of literary excellence."

Marist School is honored to play a role in fostering a community of passionate readers by hosting Battle of the Books. We extend our gratitude to all the students, volunteers, and educators who make this event possible each year.
